Simon King has a track record as an insight-led digital innovator, specialising in making new thinking work within large, complex organisations.
His career began at the BBC working on bringing much-loved brands such as Top Gear into the digital space. As part of the BBC Management Trainee Scheme he also won a cross-BBC prize for developing a new business digital concept. After that, Simon worked as Strategy Director for a number of business units at WPP plc including a digital media technology (DMT) corporate ventures fund. He was fortunate enough to win further awards for work with Direct Line Group and work with clients including Vodafone, FIFA and PlayStation globally.
Technology-led innovation then became central, when Simon moved to the North East of England to establish EU-funded technology incubator that successfully spun out a number of business and then co-founded two digital start-ups. From there he worked for major asset-management company, Standard Life Aberdeen, as UX manager and then went on to set up insight-led innovation consultancy, Origin Experience Design Ltd. which he successfully managed for seven years brining his background in disruptive innovation and start-ups into the corporate environment including developing the processes, training and research facility for RBS’ Open Experience innovation lab and working closely with Booking.com’s Tel Aviv-based AI business to create consumer-facing propositions based on data insight. Origin grew to a truly international presence working in 14 countries in the last financial year and won two awards for work in the financial services sector.
Simon recently begun work as Deputy Digital Director Head of User Centred Design at DWP where he manages the work of DWP Innovation Lab that provides a rapid technology innovation resource for the department, addressing cross-cutting issues with design-thinking led methodologies.
